The academic program has been developed by several Spanish teachers who have a combined total of more than 100 years of experience teaching Spanish intensively. They have been in close consultation with Dr. Barbara Schmidt-Rinehart, Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio, a widely respected authority on foreign language education and study abroad. Our teachers are all native Spanish speakers who have had special training in teaching our unique program. The majority have more than ten years of experience teaching Spanish as a second language. The most important aspect of our program is its flexibility in order to accommodate the individual needs of each student. DAILY SCHEDULE.

The Special Topics class includes a variety of activities planned to increase the student's knowledge of vocabulary and expressions as well as his/her understanding of the Mexican culture. These include special conferences, workshops on specific vocabulary and grammar points as well as other activities planned considering the individual needs of any student enrolled at any given time. On Fridays from 11:30 to 2:00 there will be some special activity such as a concert or film or a visit to some place of interest in Cuernavaca. These include museums, a fire station, a police station, a hospital, a school, a bakery, a "pulqueria", the municipal market, a botanical garden and an archeological zone.
Since our principle objective is to meet the needs of each student, we are happy to plan any program that will achieve this objective. Some of the special programs that we offer are:
1) The Executive Program is designed for professionals who need to learn as much as possible in a limited time. They will be offered private classes for the number of hours that they wish and charged at the individual hourly rate.
2) Programs for specific professions. These programs will emphasize vocabulary, expressions and grammar points necessary for people needing Spanish in their careers. An important component of these courses is the inclusion of cultural factors that are important to understand when working with the Spanish-speaking community.
We have programs designed for the following specific fields:
1)Business |
6)Firemen |
2)Health care |
7)Ministers, priests and nuns |
3)Law |
8)Diplomats |
4)Bilingual teachers |
9)Social workers |
5)Police |
10)People planning to retire or travel extensively in a Spanish-speaking country |
3) Teen Program. While the center will accept individual teen-agers, we have learned that their experience is greatly enhanced when they can become part of a group of other teen-agers. At that time the Center will plan many specific activities with their interests in mind. An important aspect of this program is our Mexican brothers or sisters program. Each student will have a Mexican brother or sister selected from UNIVAC's Preparatory School. Special events such as soccer and volleyball games, pool parties, dance, etc. will be offered as well as visits to their homes and the opportunity to make a new Mexican friend of their age.
All minors must have a letter signed by their parents and notarized, giving their permission for their child to travel to México. Minors traveling with one parent must have the notarized letter signed by the other parent.
All students under 18 years of age must agree to abide by our rules for minors. These rules concern class attendance and punctuality, curfew and forbid the use of alcoholic beverages and illegal substances. Minors should request a copy of these rules, and they and their parents should sign it and return in to us before their arrival. No exceptions will be tolerated.
4) Family Learning Vacation. We are prepared to offer special Spanish classes to children from 4 to 12 who come with their parents. They may study for the number of hours appropriate to their maturity. This program offers families the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant, unique and profitable vacation.
5) University Semester Program. We can arrange specific semester programs according to the individual requirements of any university in the U.S. This program will include regular Spanish classes as well as special classes on Mexican and Latin American literature, history or civilization, special classes for different professions, and the opportunity to do an internship in the student's area of concentration. Students in this program will also be able to enroll in courses at UNIVAC as well as participate in any of their activities.
6) Heritage Speaker Program. This is a special program designed for students who have grown up in Spanish-speaking homes. They can speak Spanish fluently, but they have mayor weaknesses in their knowledge of grammar and their ability to read and write the language. For these reasons the emphasis of the program is on correcting their grammatical errors and on writing Spanish.
HOUSING
Over 90% of our students live with Mexican families because they understand that this experience offers them the opportunity to practice their Spanish while learning much more about the Mexican culture. The families are carefully selected and they are continually evaluated by both the Center and the students.
The families will provide the students daily with three nutritious meals, freshly and carefully prepared using purified water and disinfectant for fruits and vegetables. They will change sheets once a week and towels twice a week. If they live too far from the Center for a student to walk, they will provide transportation to and from the Center every day. Most importantly they will include the students in all of their family activities while also affording them privacy when they prefer it. While we believe that it is always more valuable and economical to live with a family, we can also recommend hotels in all price ranges and a limited number of apartments.
HOLIDAYS
The Center will not offer classes on the following national holidays. There are no refunds for these days, but we may offer a special activity to celebrate the holiday.
EXCURSIONS
Each week several excursions are offered to different place of historical, cultural and recreational interest. Individually they range in cost from 15.00 to 100.00 USD, but there is an excursion package offered to students who will be at the Center at least four weeks. It includes six of our most important and popular excursions and represents a considerable savings to the student.
Some of the excursions offered are:
1) City tour of Cuernavaca for new students.
2) Las Estacas (a crystal clear river in a jungle-like setting where the original Tarzan movies as well as others were filmed).
3) Taxco (a picturesque colonial town and the best place to buy silver).
4) The Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe (the most sacred spot in México, located in México City) and Teotihuacán (the famous pyramids of the sun and the moon).
5) México City (The Ballet Folklórico and/or the Museum of Anthropology, the Cathedral, the National Palace and the Templo Mayor).
6) Méico City (The home of Frida Kahlo, the museum of Dolores Olmedo, and/or Xochimilco).
7) Tepoztlán (an Indian Village with a 16th century church and convent, a fabulous market and a mountain climb to visit the Tepozteco pyramid and to appreciate the view).
8) El Rollo (huge water park with wave pools, water slides, and other attractions).
9) Xochicalco (interesting pyramids near Cuernavaca).
10) Tequesquitengo (aquatic sports at a lake).
